Franchising is one of the safest ways to start a business, because you begin with a tested brand, ready-made systems and training included. In Portugal, the sector is growing, and there are opportunities for different investor profiles and different capital levels.
What makes a franchise attractive
Before the brands, the criteria matter. A good franchise combines a recognised brand, a proven business model, serious training and support, proprietary technology and, ideally, a mechanism that aligns the franchisee's success with the network's. The more of these boxes it ticks, the more solid the investment.
Real estate as a strong bet
Among the most dynamic sectors is real estate. In 2025, the country's five largest networks grew together by more than 24% and topped €22 billion in turnover. It's a large market with consistent demand and attractive commissions.
Within real estate, Keller Williams is the name that stood out the most for growth. It had its best year ever in Portugal in 2025 and was recognised as the best KW operation outside North America. For an investor, its differentiator is clear: the large-scale Market Center model, and Growth Share, which turns network growth into shared income, already with more than €9 million distributed to agents in the country.
Different budgets, different models
Not every franchise asks for the same investment. There are accessible-entry models, like traditional real estate offices or many service brands, and there are larger-scale, larger-investment models like KW's Market Center, which starts at €200,000. The right choice depends on available capital, but also on ambition, whether you want a shop or an operation.
Decide with numbers, not brochures
Whatever the brand, the golden rule is the same. Ask for real numbers, talk to franchisees who are already operating and do the math on the investment, recurring costs and payback time before signing. A good franchise does not fear questions.
